The storm is off in the distance and here at the lodge we are in sunshine and the beauty of fall. Isabel Bailey
I took this photograph during the 85th mile of the Hardrock 100 mile run. When I took it, it was a singular moment, but as I look at it now it depicts the the entire run, and why I began running. The majesty of the mountains shows the beauty of running that I share with others, and the secret valley below, with a river snaking through it, shows how running is also something that I hold in myself, as my own.
I think this photo does a good job capturing the beauty that is so often taken for granted. This photo was taken on The Lost Coast, a beautiful place only a few miles away from grocery stores and restaurants. While people struggle with school, jobs, and family, it is very easy to lose sight of the magical things that have existed around us for years. I’m hoping that this photo can help remind people how important our relationship with nature is as well as the importance of appreciating both the big and little things in life.
This picture captures the beauty of nature and how the magical colors of a sunset are never the same.
The photo I took is of my sister. She is a very strong, capable, and powerful person. Her individuality and strength shone through in this picture. Her pose is one of the reasons I like this photo, because she makes sure you know she is empowered. I also really like the way she looks at the camera. Her eyes relay a huge amount of trust. This picture signifies the strength and trust in our relationship.
This picture captures the innocence and fun of childhood. It reminds me to enjoy simple things in life, and take time to have fun. I took this picture at sunset, so the light creates a reflection on the wet sand, which brings the picture together.
This photo was originally a mistake, but upon a second look i came to love its painting-like quality. For me it represents the feeling that oftentimes life takes the reins and you can’t always control the outcome. You can only hold on and persevere in the face of adversity.
I notice that in this picture it is hard to describe the emotion that the person in the picture portrays. My personal emotions looking at this picture change while looking and thinking about the picture because at one point the person looks a little bored but also slightly tired.
Some things that I noticed about my photograph that I didn’t notice before were the range of contrast within the photo. When I originally looked at the photo I didn’t enjoy the mish mash of contrast in different spots of the photo. I grew to like the contrast as well as the simplicity of the branches and few leaves. When I look at this photograph I just remember hiking up north by the Russian River with my family. We were on a path and I ended up wondering off and exploring on my own. This was just a few years ago, and is still fresh in my mind. When I was off wondering around I came across this beautiful tree that didn’t have much of anything on it. It was simple, just like me. I have been back many times and have always looked for that one tree. I haven’t been able to find it, which I think says something how we all can change, maybe not willingly or from season to season, but that we are just like trees or any other part of nature.
I originally liked this picture simply because of the aesthetics of the photograph and the way different aspects of the double exposure bring out different details. However, after looking at it closer, I noticed how the leaves from the ground appear on the subject’s face, and give her an impermanent and ghostly impression. I feel that this picture acts as a metaphor for childhood, a time in which kids are caught between dependence on adults and the desire to develop their own identities.
I previously did not notice how well the telephone lines and lamp post frame the sky. I feel as though this image shows a more realistic view of what appears to be an endless sky. We can dream, but our dreams will always be somewhat tinged by our origin, just as the sky, looking up, in any town in America, will be crossed by telephone lines, dotted with lights and poles. It makes me feel very hopeful. The constancy of these structures makes what is as terrifying as it is exciting seem that much more approachable.
It looks as if the sphere contains a storm, the rain suspended in a gust of frozen wind. This photograph shows how beautifully manmade objects can capture and reflect the likeness of nature.
After school one day, I went out with some friends to take photographs for our computer arts class. As they stood there, I noticed a silly nature in what was happening. It was a person taking a picture of a person taking a picture. This photograph inspires a curiosity in me. What is the man on the left taking a picture of? What would it look like if someone had taken a picture of me?
In the background of the picture, there are beams of light coming out of an unknown object. They go off into the girl’s face, giving her an angelic look. The lines in the back of the picture frame her face nicely. I really like this picture because it gives off a very quiet and calm mood, and she looks like a spy.
I take Bart every day to get to and from school. The experience has allowed me to see lots of different people all around the bay. I recently started using an SLR camera and decided to take pictures of my daily life routine. I took the picture of the trains light very passively but, now gazing at it I see how much emotion there is in the elderly mans eyes even though he isn’t looking at me.
In this photo there is a deep sense of confidence and emotion between the photographer and the “model”. The photograph plus the shadows were well thought out and were given a certain meaning. The boys shadow is his darker side, the side he keeps within himself. Theres a haunting feeling about this photo that makes you question where the photo was taken place and what was going on before and after the photo was taken.
This picture reveals a rare perspective. This perspective empowers my little brother because of the change in how he is seen. Usually, he is looked down upon because he is shorter than adults but in this picture, he is looked up upon as if he was the tall one in the room.
In this photo, I would always focus on where the rail leads to off in the distance, and not detail on the rail itself and the individual rust spots.
When I look at this photo I notice how beautiful nature is and how blessed I am to see it all around me. The trees in this photo remind me how even everyday landscapes are unique in their own way. I remember how precious life is by looking at this photo now, and seeing how nature can easily be destroyed as well as admired. I feel so small in comparison to the greatness of the world.
The light shinning on her hair and through the leaf brings out her innocence. Looking into her eyes for a long period of time you feel like you can develop some sort of connection with her.
This photo captures the mystery of a shadow. How it is always there looming over your shoulder, perhaps judging your next move or telling you where to go. This photograph is a timeless piece that could be taken in any specific era. It makes the viewer stop and think. What is this man’s story? Who is he and where is he headed? It feels classic yet modern with a geometric twist. It makes the viewer beg to know more about this mysterious man. It makes you wonder about yourself, your actions and their chain effect on other people, and of course, your ever present shadow.
I was in Lake Tahoe during winter break. It was around 4 pm and the sun was setting over the mountains. I looked up and noticed this great reflection of the sun setting into the clouds. So I couldn’t miss out on this photo opportunity.
The rain water on the street symbolizes a still river of time and the reflection inside shows the distorted world of my mind; a mirror cluttered with ideas.
When you look at anything from a different perspective, you see it differently. I took a picture of a prism, and the same photo out of focus created an abstract rainbow. The radiant light shows that there is always more inside a person that their appearance suggests. Looking closely at the photo, I notice the reflection of the rainbow on the car I put it on. I feel hope for tolerance and hope for the future.
This is a picture of the water show in front of a hotel in Las Vegas. I thought it was good because at first glance you can’t tell what it is. The photo itself has significance to me because I had never seen anything like the show the first time I saw it.
I love the contrast of this image. The colors are so vibrant from the sunset and the water and it really speaks to me. It shows me to appreciate what is in the moment and not what is ahead of me.
It’s as if the tree is crying as it dies. The bark ripping off the tree representing how the world has beat it up it’s whole life and the twinkles of light in the background representing the tree crying as it inhales it’s last breath.
This picture shows a man walking. I noticed a streak of light in the direction he was looking at. I think this photo shows to keep moving forward and never look back. “You can’t look back – you just have to put the past behind you, and find something better in your future.” ― Jodi Picoult, Salem Falls
After looking at this photo, I noticed a person with a red jacket sitting in the bottom corner. The extremely small red dot puts into perspective how massive the rocks actually are.
I took this picture just to remember a trip to Chartres Cathedral in France that I took with my mother. When I was composing my images, I thought the contrast would be nice and decided to take a closer shot. Looking at it now, I feel a connection with the candles because they are memorial candles, not just candles for light. I remember watching family members light candles for their loved ones, and I feel a connection because in my family (a Jewish one but fairly untraditional) we light memorial candles for the passed. This image has a tenderness that comes out of the darkness and into the yellow light from the flame that warms my soul and reminds me that although family members have passed, their flame still burns inside the living.
This photograph, which I took in Hawaii, shows the peacefulness and serenity of nature. It represents the importance of preserving our environment and endangered animals, like sea turtles, in order to preserve the beautiful aspect of nature.
After looking at it longer, I noticed the balance in the photo. I didn’t think about this when I took the photo but now I see that it shows the balance in nature. Balancing things is difficult, and I think not enough people find it, but it can be found in places overlooked.
There is a lot of contrast in the photo, creating high tension and drama. The formation of the leaves create ripples which represents that every action has a broader effect than what we normally perceive; whether the action affects others or it affects ourselves in the future.
The small explosion of light in the darkness is a reminder that even in times of extreme darkness and despair, there is always something to help you pull through – the light at the end of the tunnel.
The man is bridging the cultural gap from Native American history to white history with out seeming out of place at the Stanford Pow Wow.
As I look at this photo I see the people’s expressions for the first time, specifically the old man in the back-ground. I notice his simple smile and thought back to what he owned. Unlike many people I know he lived in a house he built with a wheat field and some sheep, and best of all a beautiful view. I then think back to his smile and realize he is happy living simply and it is not the new things that are important.
I was walking by this river one afternoon, and I noticed that for some reason, there were chairs in the middle of the river. I found that kind of intriguing, and decided to take a picture of it. Later on, I decided to go through my pictures from vacation and noticed that the chairs actually looked very nice due to the lighting of the photo and the angle of my camera when the photo was taken. When I see this picture, I’m reminded of the warm sunny day that I spent walking by this river on vacation.
Before leaving Israel to head to the US we had an amazing view of Tel Aviv. The clouds lay right on top of the beautiful city.
Before looking at this photograph more closely I hadn’t noticed the father in the background carrying his child and walking with his other child behind him. I also hadn’t really paid attention to the big blue and yellow trash cans as well as the construction in the back. Even in beautiful places, like the beach, trash cans are present and this reminds me of our consumerist society and of the effect we have on all nature everywhere.
My film camera is resting on the soft bed of grass in my backyard as a capture an image of it. The more I look at it, I see my hands in the lens and I looks like I am trying to adjust the lens itself.
Not being able to see the sky and only having the reflection to provide that image really stands out to me. I love having that feeling that the sky and the ground are so different and provide us with two different landscapes to view everyday.
The broken chair and the distant shadow of a tree gives the viewer an interesting perspective on this image. The shades of green and changes in textures provide a different kind of background and environment to view.
The man’s shadow is illuminated by a sliver of light. The dark pavement creates an interesting back round and adds emphasis to his shadow as well as the white park sign.
When I took a second look at my picture, I noticed how the sky and ground have the exact same fabulous color and how the sun’s color is different from what we usually see. This picture is considered as a motivation source for me. For me the sun is like my goal, even if it is far away, in some how I was able to grab it, and grab it easily.
Upon initially glancing at this photo, the vivid fear of walking over the jungle canopy revitalized itself in my mind. However, after observing the unnerving wooden pathway that floats 50 feet above the jungle floor, I realized that only way to move forward is by facing one’s fears. I took several brave steps forward, and eventually journeyed across the entirety of the intimidating bridge. As a result, I was rewarded with a majestic view of the jungle canopy and the nearby city skyline.
At Duveneck Elementary they had a end of the year talent show. My little sister decided to do a ballet dance. As she was dancing I positioned my camera so the sun was directly behind her to make a very dark picture.
I love photographing flowers and nature, and this flower in particular is one of my favorites. My camera captured the brightness of nature, which is portrayed perfectly by this rose.
After taking this photo and looking at it I noticed the layers that it has with the sky, clouds and ocean, which I thought was a pretty cool contrast.
After the rain, raindrops remained, the knuckles of the bare branch like an old man’s hand. A human looking shaped leaf is standing at the tip of a branch, facing toward the sky as if he is willing to take off. This is the feeling of how I always feel when it’s Autumn. Leaves fall off the tree and the world becomes colorless. Foggy days make people depressed and more sentimental.
I think the image shows how if we do not clean up our environment, it will become dirt. The reflection of the sky with the clouds shows how this beautiful sky could turn into this pile of dirt. The people of this planet need to clean it up and help save these skies and these environments from turning into something terrible.
The streaks in her hair appear like streaks of gold. This picture represents the immortality of a photograph. The tones on the girl’s face do not look realistic, and therefore she does not look fleshy and prone to aging. She looks like a perfect, eternally youthful image of the human form.
Now that I really look at this photo i feel like it shows a sense of love but also shows how people now worry to much about the things we own and not the people in our lives. It shows love because my father is carefully cleaning his car and making sure he doesnt miss a spot. But you can see my sister’s reflection in the car, and it seem as though she is trying to get my dads attention and he isnt listening because he is more worried about his car.
One of the most interesting aspects of Death Valley is how devoid of life it is. Over millions of years, the ancient lake bed that used to make up Death Valley has been turned on its side, and eroded, leaving behind jagged peaks without any evidence of life. It almost looks like a different planet.
The longer I looked at this photo of my friend behind a tree, I realized that her hair blended in to the tree branches, and that the branches looked like cracks in her face.
This photo leads you to the back of it like a trail and your eye can’t help but follow it. The trail curves, so you know that what you are being taken to is totally worth it. It is like a hidden surprise and the trees are guiding you into it.
This photo looks like it comes out of an old horror film. It has an erie look to it like it is cluing you into something that is going to happen, but you don’t know what. It has a sense of mystery, like there could be people in the back of the picture and you just have no idea.
This is my friend, he is standing inside a metal sculpture. Although many things in life appear to be flat and boring, this wall is actually circular.
Before photography, I really didn’t pay any attention to the small details around me; I was always so absorbed into things I thought took priority over leisure. From my experiences as a photographer I’ve really learned to appreciate the little things in life that really add onto your personality. I’ve bettered myself as a person as well as a photographer by enjoying my surroundings and becoming more sensitive to what’s around me.
As I was walking along The Embarcadero, I saw this young boy playing his trumpet. It reminded me that it is important to take time out of our busy days to do thing that bring happiness to ourselves and others.
By looking at a person, you can only see a little bit of them, and the same goes for this photo. Most of the computer is covered in shadows, but it’s still there.
Our opinion of beauty has slowly shifted from the natural world and into the hands of something we’re capable of creating. Beauty at a price. It’s tragic, yes, but that’s the direction mankind is paving the way towards.
This photo reflects the feeling of loss of faith. Many people in Silicon Valley are resorting to suicide, leaving behind only material things to represent what their life once was. The window represents what might be the pathway to Heaven. People might believe that their true treasure lies in the afterlife. This is extremely tragic because there is no way we will ever know.
This photo looks much better in black and white. Without the colors, the main focus of the picture is the design and shape of the bench.
This is a photograph of my first Father’s Day gift. I cannot look at it without remembering how much I enjoyed parenting and how easy it was to bring up my children. I liked the gift so much I photographed it. The original is in my dinner room; the photograph in my bedroom. The child turned out to be a little bit artistic.
When I took the photo I just saw the mountain with the ice and grass. But after I looked more closely after I took it, I saw two people made out of grass talking.
When taking this picture I loved the symmetry. However looking back on it, I realized that there is symmetry in all of nature, even in myself.
This photo is truly magical. The light streams through the clouds at odd places, hitting the hills with beauty and colors. It seems to represent the serenity of nature.
The light in this photo can be viewed as a reference to hope, happiness, or any other powerful emotion coming from the viewer. The finger creates a message that the ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ is so close you can almost touch it.
The water drops make a main path which has smaller droplets straying away which signifies that life consists of many choices and it’s okay to go off sometimes.
When I first took the picture I thought it was more saddening than heartening. The hiker is alone, garbed in black, and surrounded by a giant valley of nothing with cloudy mountains blocking his escape. But as I look longer, the image gives me a sense of serenity, I am calm, and I think that is how the walker feels too.
After observing this picture very carefully, I realized that turtles are pretty similar to humans. They feel emotions, and although they don’t have facial expressions the way we do, they still show how they feel. This turtle is happy and excited to eat her meal, just as humans tend to be.
The sun shining through the trees makes the dark shadows seem brighter, making the picture actually quite positive even though it’s dark shadows.
Silicon valley is famous for its innovations and creative ideas; as high school student in Silicon Valley, I thought it was interesting to take a photo of an old console at computer history museum in Mountain View. I like how old computers are not graphic – user interfaced but all text – based unlike modern day computers. That makes this photo abstract as well.
This is a picture of a 2 week old border collie mix in the Andes in Ecuador. He reminds me of my old border collie named Bob that died 5 years ago. Bob was one of my best friends and this dog reminded me of the love I had for my old dog.
I chose this picture of my sister at the Bay Lands while she was searching for bones. She is an Anthropology Forensic major. This photo has meaning to her and I because this is when she first discovered that that is the field she wanted to go into.
The color was the original thing that I noticed about this photo. The deep blue lake compared to the baby blue sky is really interesting to me. I also noticed how in the foreground of the picture, the green trees are very defined and even the people on the bridge in the lower left corner are pretty differentiated. But as you look farther back, you can still see the boats in the lake along with the ripples in the water made in their trail. The trees are pretty foggy behind the lake and even further back the mountains are almost completely faded. Nonetheless, this creates a beautiful image of Donner Lake on a beautiful day.
Beauty can be found in the most unexpected places. I grew up going to the baylands duck pond every day and going there again to take this photo brought up many great memories. I wanted to show the beauty I saw in my memories through this photo.
A stunning representation of the images found of a mac desktop. Rather than seeing it on your monitor, you see it in real life and get to experience the beauty first hand.
Looking at this photo more closely, I notice children playing in the center. I didn’t notice them when I took the photo. Because of those kids, I feel a bit joyful, but overall the scene is kind of gray. The trees and flowers haven’t started to bloom. The scene feels a bit austere, but also hopeful.
The spiderweb in this photo seems to catch the ray of light. Looking at this photo reminds me of how beautiful and delicate nature is. The little flares of light add a whimsical feeling.
The three women pass by in a blur that melts two of them together and the art on the walls blurs out of focus and meaning. Now the image is more about the rush to see everything and do everything, to be the most interesting person at the dinner party.
This photo looks beautiful, but you don’t discover its deeper beauty until you really look into it. To me this photo represents more than just one lesson. We see a larger landscape in the back of this small group of leaves. This tells us that sometimes the smaller things in life can be the things that we will enjoy and remember forever. Additionally, it tells us that we should try to do one thing at a time and enjoy them rather than worry about how the future will turn out.
This flower represents something different in a world full of the same things. The purple really contrasts against the grass, creating a unique and inspiring photo.
This photo conveys to me an inner strength that the woman holds deep inside of her. She encompasses my idea of a courageous and determined woman, one not afraid of life’s hardships or struggles. I feel inspired looking into her eyes. I imagine she is an old soul who has experienced much more than I have in my lifetime. I see a wisdom in her face that only comes from deep life experiences and I wish she would teach me about the world. I want to know her secrets.
This photo demonstrates that there is always more that meets the eye. The algae on the tree are a whole other living organism aside from the tree. I feel dazed that these small details are frequently overlooked. Depending on the viewer’s perspective, it is incredible what new observations can be made.
Which way’s the right way? Up or down? Either way. these two worlds have taken different paths yet the same paths. I feel confusion and desperation to know which direction the picture is supposed to be. The meaning of this picture is not seen unless you think of the meaning. It’s a picture for you to ponder about the wonders of reflection.
The metal poles are a support system for the bleachers next to the football field. They form an x-shape down a pathway. At a closer glance they can be looked at as life barriers. Everyday everyone is faced with a new challenge, and everyone must find a way to overcome those challenges and pass through the barriers.
They are really really cute. The photo does not have as much contrast as I want to. And there is too much sun.
My parents both grew up in Taiwan and going there gave me a chance to step in their shoes. This is the photo of Taipei 101, one of the tallest buildings in the world. However, the longer your look at the photo you notice the small intricate lines on the building and the angle at which the building is taken in intrigues the viewer.
The cascading arches create a tunnel from one courtyard to the next. I always visit this place during reunions.
This photo represents how the beautiful things in life are often camouflaged behind unnecessary things. It also shows how the beauty in some things are on the inside.
